There was a time when Nintendo would be able to say “we’ve got this new guy, he’s a plumber who eats mushrooms and rescues a princess from a bunch of turtles,” and everyone would reply “sure, why not?”
Sure, they were simpler times when this was about the best idea going in gaming and of course their fans were less discerning. Nevertheless the character became the most famous one in videogame history, still going strong to this day. I’d like to see Nintendo reach back into their 1980s brain and come up with something brand new but similarly carefree in its conception.
